Chapter 7
• In Chapter 7, Dill goes home and Scout gets ready for the second
grade. She discovers it isn't any better than the first grade.
• Scout and Jem walk home and glance something in the knothole in
the Radley's tree. There is a ball of twine. Some time later, they find two
soap figures of children. A couple of weeks later they discover a pack of
chewing gum. The following week, they find a spelling bee medal lying in the
knothole. Four days after that, they discover a broken pocket watch. Jem
decides to fix the broken watch and then he can return the family watch to his
father.
• Jem thinks they should leave a note in the tree to say thank you
for the gifts, but when they go back to check the tree, the knothole is filled
with cement. Nathan Radley tells the children that the tree was sick and he had
to fill the hole.
Chapter 8
• In Chapter 8, the coldest winter since 1885 hits Alabama. Mrs.
Radley dies that winter, but people don't seem to notice.
• The temperature dips one night and Miss Maudie's house catches
on fire. Mr. Avery gets stuck trying to get out his window, but he eventually
makes it to safety.
• Jem and Scout sleep late the next morning and see Miss Maudie
when they go outside. They apologize about her house, but she says that she
wanted to burn it down many times. The fire will give her a chance to rebuild.
Chapter 9
• In Chapter 9, one day in school, a boy says that Scout's daddy
is defending a nigger. She asks Atticus about it that night, he says its true
and it's something he has to do even though he knows that he won't win. He asks
Scout not to fight about this and she agrees.
• Jem and Scout spend Christmas with Aunt Alexandra and Francis,
and they also get to see Uncle Jack.
• Aunt Alexandra takes every opportunity to insult Scout about her
clothes and behavior. Francis bores Scout and when he calls Atticus a nigger
lover, Scout attacks him.
Chapter 10
• In Chapter 10, as Scout and Jem are getting ready for target practice
Atticus tells them that it's a sin to kill a mockingbird, since all it does is
make sweet music. Cal and Miss Maudie both agree with Atticus that killing a
mockingbird is a sin.
• Later, the children encounter a rabid dog and Sheriff Heck Tate
insists that Atticus has to shoot the dog. It must be killed in one shot, and
the sheriff knows Atticus can do it.
• Scout and Jem are speechless about what they saw. Their father
killed the dog and saved the neighbors.
Chapter 11
• In Chapter 11, Jem plans to spend his birthday money on a toy
train for himself and a baton for Scout. On their way home, they pass Mrs.
Rachel DuBose house.
• Mrs. Rachel DuBose is a mean-spirited woman who calls to them
from her front porch. They put up with her comments until she says that Atticus
is representing a nigger; then Jem loses control, grabs Scout's baton, and
destroys Mrs. DuBose’s camellias.
• When Atticus comes home from work, he sends Jem to apologize to
Mrs. DuBose; Jem returns home and tells Atticus that Miss Rachel wants him to
read to her each afternoon. Jem says that he won't do it, but Atticus assures
him that he will.
• Soon after Jem stops reading to Mrs. DuBose, she dies. Atticus
explains that she was a morphine addict and that Jem’s reading helped Mrs. DuBose
to overcome her addiction.
• Atticus returns from her deathbed with a box for Jem; he opens
it and finds a camellia.
