Week of Dec 7-11

Of Mice and Men- Culminating Project Body Biography For your assigned character, your group will be creating a body biography- a visual and written, life-sized portrait illustrating several aspects of the character’s life within the story. After completing this portrait, you will participate in a presentation in which you will present your masterpiece to the class. Your character biography should:
•review significant events, choices, and changes involving your character
•represent the full essence of your character by emphasizing the traits that make him/her who he/she is
•be creative, analytical, and accurate In order to complete this body biography, follow the steps in this packet. At any time your group has a question: ask it! Don’t waste any time, you’re in a strict time crunch. Your character biography will be graded based upon the following criteria:
•Are all significant events involving your character covered?
•Is your character represented by his/her traits covered in the story?
•Are appropriate visual symbols used?
•Are at least four appropriate quotes from the book included?
•Are the quotes placed in a logical and appropriate place?
•Is an original text included? *An original text must be included in your biography. This means the group must create an original text (at least four lines total) which represents the character. This original text must also be appropriately placed on the body biography. Body Biography Placement Suggestions: As a group, discuss what types of traits might go in these places and why. Heart: Mind: Spine: Hands: Feet: Mouth: Eyes: Fingers: Hair: Body Biography Artwork Suggestions: Use pencil to draft! Use colors analytically. (Colors are often symbolic. What colors do you most associate with your character? Why?) Use illustrations as symbols. (What objects can you use to represent your character?) Is your character dynamic? (How will show your character’s changes in the biography?)

Welcome back!!! Hope you all had a great and restful break... This week we will be taking our final test on Of Mice and Men, and then Wed, Thurs and Friday we will be watching the movie for the novel.

Week of October 26-30

We are finished with To Kill a Mockingbird!!!!

Chapter 26

• In Chapter 26, Scout's third grade teacher gives a lecture about how Hitler persecuted the Jews.

• The teacher speaks about equality and Scout listens to her, but later she asks how she can speak of equality after her reaction at Tom Robinson's trial.

Chapter 27

• In Chapter 27, there is a Depression-era job program and Bob Ewell gets a job. A few days later, he losses it.

• At Halloween, the local school schedules a pageant to occupy the townsfolk and hinder trouble like they had the previous year. Atticus and Aunt Alexandra are tired and stay home that evening.

Chapter 28

• In Chapter 28, Jem walks Scout to the pageant and the school children go backstage for the show, but Scout falls asleep. She wakes at the last minute and runs onto the stage.

• The audience erupts in laughter and Scout is accused of ruining the pageant.

• On their way home, Scout and Jem hear someone behind them and are almost to the road when someone chases them; Jem tells Scout to run, but the trial is dark and her costume is awkward.

• Scout and Jem struggle with the assailant and suddenly the attacker is pulled away.

• Scout manages to get home in time to see a man carrying Jem.

• Jem is unconscious and has a broken arm, but he'll be all right. Atticus finds out that Ewell is dead with a knife stuck under his ribs.

Chapter 29

• In Chapter 29, Heck Tate tells Scout that her costume was slashed with a knife.

• Scout realizes the man who saved her and Jem is Arthur "Boo" Radley.

Chapters 30 and 31

• In Chapter 30, Scout walks outside onto the porch with Boo and listens to as Heck insists that Ewell fell on the knife and his death was an accident.

• Heck knows that Boo killed the man, but wants to keep it quiet. Heck tells Atticus, "Let the dead bury the dead."

• In Chapter 31, Boo and Scout say goodnight to Jem and Scout walks home with Boo.

• When Boo walks in the door of his house, it's the last time Scout will ever see him.

 What did you all think? Was Heck Tate right to do what he did? What would you have done?

What is your opinion on Jem still never seeing Boo? Is it fair? Do you it is right for Heck Tate and Atticus to ask Scout to change her story?

Week of Oct. 19-23

Review of what we have read so far in To Kill a Mockingbird

Chapter 18

• In Chapter 18, Mayella makes her appearance in the court and is reasonably clean, but she is also terrified.

• Mayella testifies that she called Tom inside the gate and offered to pay him five cents to break up a dresser. She says that once the he was inside, he took advantage of her.

• Atticus is confused about how Tom Robinson, who's left hand was caught in a cotton gin, could've hurt her on the right side. Mayella begins to cry and refuses to say anything else.

• The chapter ends as the prosecution rests.

Chapter 19

• In Chapter 19, Atticus calls Tom Robinson to the stand. Tom will be his only witness. Tom testifies that on the evening in question Mayella asked him inside to repair a door, but he discovered the door wasn't broken. Mayella tried to seduce him but he pushed her away.

• When Mayella’s father saw them, Ewell called Mayella a whore, threatened to kill her, and he beat her.

• When the prosecutor cross-examines Tom, he admits to being arrested one time for disorderly conduct. They also agree that Tom was strong enough to sling Mayella to the floor with one hand.

• The prosecutor asks Tom why he helped Mayella and he admits that he felt sorry for her. This is unforgivable to the white people of Maycomb, who feel Tom is overstepping his station.

Chapter 20

• In Chapter 20, Dolphus Raymond tells Scout and Dill that he pretends to be drunk because this lets him live his life the way he wants. The truth of the matter is simply that he prefers black people to white peopl

Chapter 21

• In Chapter 21, Cal hands Atticus a note that the children didn't come home. Mr. Underwood points out that the children are in the balcony.

• Scout, Jem and Dill want to stay, but Atticus tells them to go home for dinner and then they can return. They go home with Cal and rush back to the courthouse.

• The verdict is read; they found Tom Robinson guilty.

Chapter 22

• In Chapter 22, Jem cries about the injustice he witnessed with the guilty verdict. The black people of Maycomb bring many dishes of food to the Finch household.

• Miss Maudie tries to help the children by saying the judge did what he could to guarantee a fair trial by assigning Atticus to defend Tom.

• Miss Stephanie tells them Ewell spit on Atticus earlier in the day and swore to get revenge for what he feels Atticus did to him.

Chapter 23

• In Chapter 23, Atticus is the only one in the family who isn't concerned about Bob Ewell's threats after Atticus made him look stupid.

• Tom Robinson has been moved to a prison that is seventy miles from Maycomb.

• Atticus tries to help Jem understand that any white man's word is more valued than the word of a black man. They discuss that one juror wanted to find Tom innocent. Scout is happy to hear that it was Walter Cunningham's father.

Chapter 24

• In Chapter 24, Aunt Alexandra has society ladies over for a missionary circle tea and insists that Scout attend, and she must wear a dress.

• Scout listens as they discuss the injustice in other areas of the world. These comments are followed by insights into the "misbehavior" of their black servants since the Robinson verdict.

• Atticus tells Alexandra, Maudie, Scout and Cal that Tom Robinson tried to escape and he was shot seventeen times. Calpurnia goes with Atticus to notify Tom's family.

Chapter 25

• In Chapter 25, Jem runs into Atticus and asks if he can go with him to the Robinsons’. News of Tom's death circulates for a couple of days and the white people agree that only a black man would do something that irrational.

• Mr. Underwood writes an editorial for the newspaper stating that an innocent man was murdered.

Week of Oct. 12-16

Overview of To Kill a Mockingbird so far...

We are getting into the trail of Tom Robinson. I know many of you are questioning what is left after the trail, but just wait and see, well read, there is so much more!!!!

Chapter 12

• In Chapter 12, Jem turns twelve and Scout finds it much harder to communicate with him.

• Scout receives a letter from Dill saying he has a new father and won't visit this summer.

• Atticus leaves for a couple of weeks to work at the state legislature and Cal brings Jem and Scout to church with her. One woman raises a ruckus that two white children are in their church but Cal assures her that these children her company.

• Jem and Scout question Cal about her double life. She speaks "proper" English when they are together, but speaks very differently when she is with her congregation. Cal tries to explain that she would be putting on airs to speak any other way.

Chapter 13

• In Chapter 13, Aunt Alexandra shows up at the Finch household after making the decision that she must help Atticus with the children and provide a "feminine influence."

• People in Maycomb are very conscious of family and Aunt Alexandra exemplifies this trait.

Chapter 14

• In Chapter 14, Tom Robinson's trial is approaching and this causes more problems for Scout and Jem.

• Scout and Jem have a fight and when Scout returns to her room, she finds Dill under her bed. When she tells Jem, he goes to Atticus and tells him.

Chapter 15

• In Chapter 15, the trial is about to begin and Tom Robinson is moved to a Maycomb jail, which causes the sheriff and Atticus to worry about a lynch mob.

• Atticus goes into town and sits in a chair outside the jail reading a newspaper. The expected mob shows up and insists that Atticus move away from the door. He stays where he is.

• Scout realizes these aren't the same men who came to their house. She also recognizes Walter Cunningham's father and asks him to say "hey" to Walter for her. Mr. Cunningham agrees to tell Walter "hey" and the men decide to leave.

Chapter 16

• In Chapter 16, Tom Robinson's trial begins and all sorts of people are in attendance. The white people of Maycomb sit in the main section of the courthouse, while the black people are forced to sit upstairs in the balcony.

• Scout, Jem and Dill arrive at the last minute to avoid Atticus and Cal's minister lets them sit with him in the balcony.

Chapter 17

• In Chapter 17, Mr. Gilmer, the prosecutor, begins his case by having Sheriff Tate relate the incidents of the evening of November 21.

• Tate testifies that Bob Ewell called him to the Ewell residence because he claimed his daughter Mayella was raped by Tom Robinson. When the sheriff arrived, he found Mayella beaten and bruised.

• When the Sheriff is cross-examined, the Sheriff admits the doctor was not called and the bruises were on the right side of her face.

• Atticus has Ewell write his name and the jury sees that he is left-handed. The person who made the bruises on the right side of Mayella's face was likely to be left handed.
